LockDown Browser / Monitor Computer Requirements for Test Taking

One last bit of information...

It is likely that your instructor(s) will be giving you online tests using a secure test-taking web browser called Respondus LockDown Browser and may also require the use of an additional feature called Monitor.

LockDown Browser (with or without Monitor) is a stand-alone web browser that works in conjunction with Blackboard. Some of the things it prevents, during test taking, are the following:

  • Printing
  • Copying
  • Going to another URL (web page)
  • Accessing other applications (such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PDFs, non-LockDown Browser calculators, etc.)

If your instructor requires you to take a test using LockDown Browser (Monitor), you cannot take the test using a standard web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, etc.) and you cannot take the test from within Blackboard.

LockDown Browser can be installed on Windows and Mac desktops and laptops, as well as iPads (instructor must enable test option), but NOT on the following:

  • Chromebooks
  • Android devices
  • iPhones
  • Windows 10S operating system
  • Linux

LockDown Browser/Monitor DOES WORK with the following Operating Systems:

  • Windows: 10, 8, 7
  • Mac: macOS 10.12 to 10.15
  • iOS: 11.0+ (iPad only)

Memory Requirements:

  • Windows: 2 GB RAM
  • Mac: 2 GB RAM

Hard Disk Space:

  • Windows: 200 MB of free hard disk space
  • Mac: 200 MB of free hard disk space

Again, you MUST take your test in the LockDown Browser if your instructor requires it. Open LockDown Browser. Sign into Okta and then go to Blackboard to access the test in your course in that browser instead of your normal browser.

For complete download and installation instructions, go to the guide called LockDown Browser Installation - Student View available at https://libguides.sctech.edu/student_lockdown_browser_installation. You can find the link needed to download the browser in that LibGuide.

Please follow ALL instructions to reduce your likelihood of needing to submit a helpdesk ticket.
