Instructions for installing LockDown Browser

LockDown Browser Installation

WHAT IS RESPONDUS LOCKDOWN BROWSER?

"LockDown Browser is a locked browser for taking tests in Blackboard Learn. It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during a test. If a Blackboard test requires that LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the test with a standard web browser. Only LockDown Browser should only be used for taking Blackboard tests."

Note: once you begin a test using LockDown Browser, you cannot exit the test or browser until the Submit button for the test has been clicked.

For more information, please see the Student Quick Start Guide (pdf).

You may also wish to view the video Introduction to Respondus LockDown Browser for Students.

You may see the instructions in the screenshot below, or something similar, in your course; perhaps in the Course Syllabus or Start Here section.

To install LockDown Browser on your computer, you need to use the school-specific SCTC link to begin the process. It is https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=738795795

Note: According to the Respondus website, you may need to loosen the restrictions on your antivirus software or firewall only for the duration of the download and installation. This will be a short duration of time. Afterwards, return your antivirus software and/or firewall to the previous levels. LockDown Browser (and Monitor) will NOT interfere with your antivirus software or firewall during use. Your antivirus software and firewall will not be turned off and will remain active while taking a test.

Symptom: You are not able to download the LockDownBrowser-xxx-yy.exe setup file (where "xxx-yy" is the version number), or when you run it you see a message indicating that it is not a Windows application.

Solution 1: Try downloading the setup file using a different browser, such as Firefox or Google Chrome.

Solution 2: Make sure that antivirus or security software is not interfering with the download. For example, some security software will change the file extension for .EXE files. So, the installer can’t be run until the file is renamed back to “LockDownBrowser-xxx-yy.exe”.

If you are still unable to download the LockDown Browser installer or run it, these steps will resolve most causes of the problems:

1. Directly log into the Windows computer as a local administrator with full rights. Do not use "Switch User" or a "Remote Desktop" access.
2. Temporarily relax all security software. Afterwards, restore your security software to its normal status.
3. Download the LockDown Browser installer intended for your institution.
4. Run the installer and accept the prompts to modify or repair LockDown Browser.
5. Start LockDown Browser to verify installation. Exit the browser.
6. Re-enable any security software that was disabled in Step 2.

The InstallShield setup for LockDown Browser needs to run with Administrator rights to work properly. For Windows 7, 8/8.1, and 10 this means the setup needs to have permission to run by the administrator of the computer. You may also need to enter a password for the Administrator Windows account.
